Scroll down to the lower section of the Focus Assist configuration UI and in the Automatic rules category, toggle the switch for When I’m playing games to off. ![]() To do this, open the Settings app and navigate to the following path: Settings > System > Focus Assist This means the only way to remove the bug and benefit from the expected gaming performance is to turn it off completely. They often cause performance issues or could even contribute to the game eventually crashing altogether.īut as it turns out, Focus Assist doesn’t help much either, as it makes app switching very slow in April 2018 Update. On paper, this sounds pretty handy because notifications showing up in the lower right corner can cover certain parts of the screen critical for the gaming experience. This particular feature comes with pre-configured rules that automatically silent notifications when playing games in full screen, so Windows 10 users can thus run a game without being interrupted by notifications. The one to blame for this is Focus Assist, a new feature that Microsoft added in this Windows 10 Update and based on Quiet Hours, previously introduced with the Fall Creators Update.Īs you could guess by reading its name, Focus Assist is supposed to help you focus on what’s running on the screen, so it blocks notifications that would normally show up occasionally. And while this whole process was supposed to take place blazing fast in order to have a minimum impact on gaming, this isn’t the case on many systems already upgraded to the Windows 10 April 2018 Update. Pressing Alt + Tab allows gamers to switch to a different screen when running a game in full screen, and using the same hotkey allows them to return to the game easily. Specifically, the bug causes desktop app switching (Alt + Tab) to be particularly slow when playing games on a system running the April 2018 Update. Users can download and install the April 2018 Update either using the standalone ISO images or via Windows Update, with the latter requiring less interaction and taking care of the upgrade process from the beginning to the end.īut the more systems install the new OS version, the bigger the number of discovered bugs, and one of the most widespread appears to impact gaming.Įven though each Windows 10 feature update is specifically focused on delivering a refined gaming experience, it looks like one of the improvements that Microsoft included in the April 2018 Update has exactly the opposite effect. Windows 10 April 2018 Update is now available for users who want to manually download it ahead of the automatic rollout that Microsoft will begin on May 8. Extremely large games could be made to span across multiple discs on CD-based systems, while cartridge games had to be contained within one unit as using an additional cartridge was prohibitively expensive (and was never tried). Games ported from other media had to use data compression or reduced content to be released on the N64. ![]() As fifth generation games became more complex in content, sound and graphics, it pushed cartridges to the limits of their storage capacity. The cartridges can have a maximum of 64 MB of data, whereas CDs held over 650 MB. They also have a more complex manufacturing processes cartridge-based games were usually more expensive to manufacture than their optical counterparts. While game cartridges are more resistant than CDs to physical damage, they are sometimes less resistant to long-term environmental damage, particularly oxidation (although this can be simply cleaned off) or wear of their electrical contacts causing a blank or frozen screen, or static electricity. ![]() ROM cartridges also have disadvantages associated with them. It is possible to add specialized I/O hardware and support chips (such as co-processors) to ROM cartridges, as was done on some SNES games (including Star Fox, using the Super FX chip). It also prevents accidental scratches and subsequent read errors. The cartridges are also far more durable than compact discs, the latter which must be carefully used and stored in protective cases. Compared to the N64, piracy was rampant on the PlayStation. While unauthorized interface devices for the PC were later developed, these devices are rare when compared to a regular CD drive and popular mod chips used on the PlayStation. Also, ROM cartridges are difficult and expensive to duplicate, thus resisting piracy, albeit at the expense of lowered profit margin for Nintendo. This was done in Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, for example, to make the most of the limited RAM in the N64. ROM carts were much faster than the 2× CD-ROM drives in other consoles that developers could stream data in real-time from them. This can be observed from the loading screens that appear in many PlayStation games but are typically non-existent in N64 versions. Primarily cited was the ROM cartridges' very fast load times in comparison to disc-based games, as contemporary CD-ROM drives rarely had speeds above 4×. Nintendo cited several advantages for making the N64 cartridge-based. Much of this success was credited to Nintendo's strong first-party franchises, such as Mario, which had strong name brand appeal. ![]() ![]() ĭespite the difficulties with third-parties, the N64 still managed to support popular games such as GoldenEye 007, giving it a long shelf-life. Most of the N64's biggest successes were developed by either Nintendo itself or by second-parties of Nintendo, such as Rare. New Nintendo 64 game releases were infrequent while new games were coming out rapidly for the PlayStation. Konami was the biggest example of this, releasing only thirteen N64 games but over fifty on the PlayStation. Most third-party developers switched to the PlayStation, such as Square and Enix, whose Final Fantasy VII and Dragon Quest VII were initially pre-planned for the N64, while some who remained released fewer games to the Nintendo 64. Especially for the latter, it was costly and difficult to develop for ROM cartridges, as their limited storage capacity (64 MB or a mere 9% of a Compact Disc 700 MB capacity) constrained the game's content. Most of the cartridge's advantages did not manifest themselves prominently and they were nullified by the cartridge's shortcomings, which disappointed customers and developers alike. The selection of the cartridge for the Nintendo 64 was a controversial decision and a key factor in Nintendo's being unable to retain its dominant position in the gaming market. In the early 1990s, under publisher Richard L. In 1986 the newspaper opened a new state-of-the-art printing facility that enabled it to produce one of the most colorful and visually attractive newspapers anywhere. StarText, an "electronic newspaper" begun in 1982, complemented the printed newspaper with updated news and information it was available on computer via a local telephone call in the Fort Worth and Dallas area. In the 1980s the Star-Telegram pioneered the establishment of an electronic information service and built one of the most modern newspaper printing and distribution plants in the nation. The second (1985) was the coveted gold-medal Pulitzer for meritorious public service it was awarded for a news series that exposed a flaw in Bell helicopters that was a factor in numerous crashes over a seventeen-year period. The first was in 1981 for photographer Larry Price's photos of Liberian officials being slain by a firing squad. Under Capital Cities, which later became Capital Cities/ABC, Incorporated, when it purchased the ABC television network in 1986, the Star-Telegram won two Pulitzer Prizes. The circulation at that time was 235,000 daily papers and 224,000 on Sundays. The paper was sold in 1974 to Capital Cities Communications, Incorporated. The paper, an active participant in the Fort Worth community, supported numerous local causes as well as efforts to create Big Bend National Park in far west Texas and to establish Texas Technological College, now Texas Tech University. Carter was majority owner and publisher of the paper until his death in 1955, when he was succeeded by his son, Amon G. In 1954, WBAP-TV also did the first colorcast in Texas, at a time when there were no more than 100 color television sets in Fort Worth and Dallas. In 1922 the paper began the first Fort Worth radio station, WBAP, "We Bring A Program." The Star-Telegram established the first television station in the southern half of the United States in the early fall of 1948 and did a remote broadcast of President Harry Truman's whistle-stop campaign visit to Fort Worth. Carter and the paper successfully resisted takeover attempts by William Randolph Hearst, who sold the Fort Worth Record to the Star-Telegram in 1925. The Star-Telegram had a preelectronic distribution area of 350,000 square miles, and daily home delivery as far as 700 miles west of Fort Worth. The new paper, known as the Star-Telegram, began publication in 1909, and was later identified in the 1920s by a phrase on its masthead reading "Where the West Begins." Carter and the paper stressed local news and served eighty-four counties, with some papers delivered in the Panhandle by stagecoach. By 1908 the Star was in financial difficulty, and Carter and Wortham decided to buy out their rival, the Telegram, an evening newspaper that dated back to the Fort Worth Evening Mail and the Fort Worth Mail Telegram and other papers beginning around 1879. The Star was first published in sixteen pages for a 4,500-copy free delivery. Dawson they also had the help of wholesale grocer and major investor Col.
